For my first top ten list, I'll be counting down my picks for the top ten Fleetwood Mac songs. Because... why not? Fleetwood Mac was a pop-rock band that began all the way back in 1967 as a blues rock band led by drummer Mick Fleetwood and bassist John McVie, and lead vocalist/guitarist Pat Green. After going through many other vocalist/guitarist, and adding Christine McVie to the line up on keyboards and vocals, Mick Fleetwood asked Buckingham Nicks guitarist Lindsey Buckingham to join the Fleetwood Mac ranks. And after Buckingham insisted that his then girlfriend and partner in crime Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood agreed, giving us the most famous line up of the group that began with their eponymous album in 1975. Now, with that aside, let's get to the list!
For this list, I've chosen songs I personally prefer, \and factored in fan favorites, and commercial success.
Number 10: "Bleed to Love Her"
From The Dance, and later released as a studio version from Say You Will
If it wasn't for its relative obscurity, this song would probably be higher on the list. Its raw emotion and angst filled vocals make this a true masterpiece in terms of the heart. You can feel the pain in Buckingham's voice that was probably brought on by the group's own Stevie Nicks. But the best thing about this song is that anyone in the world can relate to it.
Number 9: "Monday Morning"
From Fleetwood Mac
Just a cool song. This song lands at number nine because of the upbeat sound Buckingham gives us coupled with his easy to sing along with vocals. Despite the actually rather depressing lyrics, the song is very fun and seems to always end up at the front of Fleetwood Mac's shows. Well... it's usually either this one or The Chain.
Number 8: "You Make Loving Fun"
From Rumours
You have to admit, this jazzy pop song has got some really cool instrumental sounds in it. I'm... not even sure what most of them are, honestly. But there's no doubt that it sounds pretty cool. It's one of McVie's best, and falls pretty heavily and definitively on this top ten list.
Number 7: "Rhiannon"
From Fleetwood Mac
Few songs can keep an artist from wearing black cloths for two years. Stevie Nicks wrote this song after seeing the name in Welsh mythology, and loving the name so much that she wanted to write a song starring the witch. Unfortunately, it resulted in people accusing her of being involved in witchcraft and its ilk. Nevertheless, it reached number eleven on the charts, and went down in history as one of the greatest songs of all time, and is notorious for its live versions.
Number 6: "Little Lies"
From Tango In the Night
Probably Christine McVie's best song, and one of the pop best songs ever recorded, it made it to number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became Fleetwood Mac's last top ten hit in the U.S. The vocal interaction of the band members, as well as McVie's almost robotic vocal interactions with herself, makes the song something truly great to listen to. One of a kind.
Number 5: "Silver Springs"
Originally intended for Rumours, and later added as a bonus track. First released as a single from The Dance.
Probably one of the most passionate songs ever sung, and one of the very best to ever be left off an album, this song is nothing short of a masterpiece. It was originally intended as a twelfth track to Rumours, but was cut due to time restraints. Stevie Nicks was devastated. This song finally got the attention it deserved as a single from The Dance, and due to modern technology, the studio version was added to several greatest hits compilations, and the deluxe addition of the Rumours re-release on CD.
Number 4: "Dreams"
From Rumours
This was Fleetwood Mac's only US chart topper. Not only that, but it still remains one of Fleetwood Mac, and Stevie Nicks' best known songs. It reaches number five on this list because it solidified Fleetwood Mac's super-stardom, and helped make them into one of the greatest bands of all time. Nick's vocal is incredible, and Mick Fleetwood's drum line is nearly as good. All in all, this song stands as a beautifully written masterpiece.
Number 3: "Go Your Own Way"
From Rumours
Not many songs are as synonymous with pop culture as this rocker by Lindsey Buckingham. Its lyrics are powerful and emotional, and its rocking sound makes it easy for us to belt out the chorus, and memorize the words. And that guitar! There's no question that this song belongs on this list. Honestly, it could make number one any day. On this list, as well as on a list of any songs.
Number 2: "The Chain"
From Rumours
Another easy contender for number one, this song is one of the coolest songs ever written. The fact that there are no real lead vocals on the track really reflects Fleetwood Mac. In fact, I'd consider it an anthem for the group. Along with this song's powerful lyrics, vocals, drumming, and that signature bass line, it's also notable for the fact that it was co-written by each of the band members, while most of their songs are written by the individuals. I finish with a few of the lyrics. "And if you don't love me now, you will never love me again. I can still hear you saying you would never break the chain."
Number 1: "Landslide"
From Fleetwood Mac
So... this might be my favorite song. And that's the biggest reason for this tune coming in at number one on this list. Stevie Nicks wrote this song about making decisions and facing changes, and there's no doubt that we can all relate to that. And that's what makes this song fantastic. The fact that its lyrics are so powerful, and yet can affect us all in a very unique way. It solidifies Stevie Nicks as one of the greatest artists of all time, and takes its place as one of the greatest songs ever written.
In conclusion...
Fleetwood Mac is one of my favorite bands. And honestly, I think they're one of the best bands ever. So when I was wondering what top ten list to do first, this one just seemed right. You guys agree? What's your number one pick? Let me know all of this (as well as suggestions) in the comments, and I'll see ya next time.
